We’ve all pulled up to a gas pump and felt that quick flash of uncertainty. Is the fuel door on the left or the right? You guess, realize it’s wrong, and awkwardly reposition the car while others wait. It’s a small moment, but it can feel unnecessarily stressful, especially at a busy station. What many drivers don’t realize is that the solution has been visible all along.
On most vehicles there’s a tiny arrow next to the fuel gauge on the dashboard. This arrow points directly to the side of the car where the fuel door is located. One quick glance removes the guesswork and helps you line up correctly the first time. Automakers added this feature as drivers began switching vehicles more often. Rental cars, shared family vehicles, and company cars made it harder to remember fuel-door placement.
