Second chance

There I was, sitting upright, exhausted but alive, holding our newborn daughter in my arms.

He froze in the doorway, disbelief etched on his face. Then his knees buckled and tears began to flow—not from regret, but from pure relief that life had given him a second chance.

He collapsed beside the bed, his hand clasped in mine, his head bowed as if in prayer. “I thought I’d lost you,” he whispered. “Both of you.”

I looked at him, too tired to speak, but understanding everything. All the pain, all the pride, melted away in that moment.

My brother's words were never intended as cruelty. They were a mirror—showing my husband how close he came to losing the two people who loved him most.
