Fill a large metal bowl with the shredded junk mail paper.
Pour enough water over the paper to fully submerge it and let it soak for 24 hours.
After soaking, use an old wooden spoon to stir the paper, breaking down any clumps until it forms a consistent pulp.
Add 1 cup of white glue and 2 tablespoons of cornstarch to the pulp and mix thoroughly until you achieve a sticky, dough-like consistency.
Mold the mixture into the desired shape, such as a planter, using your hands or a mold.
Let the shaped paper mache dry in a well-ventilated area for at least 48 hours or until completely hardened.
Once dry, optionally paint or seal the surface for additional durability and visual appeal.
Variations & Tips
For variations, consider adding natural dyes or food coloring to the paper pulp for a splash of color. You can also experiment with different mold shapes to create bowls, trays, or even decorative sculptures. To enhance durability, apply a coat of varnish or sealant after the paper mache dries. Incorporating other natural materials like dried flowers or leaves can add texture and interest to your creation.
