First, we need to understand exactly what is meant by ‘expiration date’ and ‘use by date’. The best-before date indicates the period during which the manufacturer can guarantee the product’s optimal quality. While taste and texture may change after this date, it doesn’t necessarily mean the yogurt has spoiled. If yogurt is stored correctly after the best-before date, it can usually still be consumed without any problems. However, it’s important to carefully inspect the product for any signs of spoilage before eating.

Interesting fact: Studies conducted in France show that all types of yogurt can be consumed without problems for several days after their official best-before date. Some yogurts even proved to be edible after three weeks! This suggests that natural yogurt, in particular, can have an extended shelf life and retain all the necessary nutrients and lactic acid cultures that support the growth of beneficial bacteria. The most significant change in older yogurt is a decrease in pH, which can alter the taste.

However, if mold is detected on the yogurt after the best-before date, it is strongly advised not to consume it, as the risk of food poisoning increases significantly. This can lead to symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and cramps, high fever, and possibly even dehydration.
